Rhiannon J Gray earned their BFA in Intermedia from the University of Edinburgh. Their artistic practice is guided by an inquiry into agency: Who is holding the wheel? Gray's work explores the meta nature of creation and the habitual acts required to bring anything into being. Growing alongside the rise of digital technologies and the decline of communal religious belief, Gray examines the human psyche’s response to a world detached from a grounded God, charting how this detachment has paved the way for nihilism and instability.
Gray’s visual style invites viewers not to renounce belief but to question and redefine it: Who is God? What is God? Their recurring interpretations of the Sun simultaneously demystify and objectify this vital life-giver, offering insights that balance the wisdom of pre-internet traditions with the uncertainties of the digital age.
A descendant of Gàidhlig seers of Scotland, Gray's upbringing was steeped in oral fables, spirits, and practices that nurtured a profound connection to the land. Their art draws inspiration from childhood memories of foraging for brambles or interpreting the flight of birds. This heritage breathes life into Rhiannon’s Parlour, a liminal space where their creations dwell—a realm of familiar creatures and metaphors that suspend the audience's sense of reality.
Gray's work transcends mere interpretation, blending memory, belief, and imagination to bridge what was once known and what we strive to know now, creating art that both grounds and mystifies.
